The National Park Service is home to the largest group of public historians in the country, and has long been entrusted with telling the full, complex story of America. At all 433 national park sites across the country, rangers are sworn to interpret history and science honestly and completely.
But recent directives have demanded parks “restore truth and sanity to American history” while reporting content that does not emphasize “beauty, grandeur, and abundance.” This has led to the silencing of critical perspectives on Black history, Indigenous history, climate science, labor history, and more.
Why is this a big deal? National park sites are more than scenic landscapes! They are classrooms, archives, and shared spaces of public memory. When information is erased or distorted, our public understanding suffers. And when people are not fully informed, they are less likely to engage, question, and act.
