Protest Censorship at Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument

Join the America 433+ campaign at the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument on Sunday, October 18 at 3pm.

America 433+ is about preserving public memory, defending public education, protecting public lands, and ensuring that our national parks reflect the full complexity of the American experience — not a narrowed, partisan, or whitewashed version of it.

The Trump administration and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum ordered Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument to censor one of the signs under Executive Order “Restoring Truth and Sanity” and the Secretary’s Order 3431.

This language was removed:

“While imprisoned, the women were beaten and force fed when they went on hunger strikes. The ensuing publicity changed public and Congressional opinion.”

Join us in person to defend truth-telling about U.S. history and the climate at our National Park Service sites. In this election season, it is important for young people to learn from the historic fight for voting rights so that they can challenge voter suppression today.

We will gather at the sign (Constitution Avenue and 2nd Streets NE) at 3pm for about one hour. (If it is raining, you can wait inside the historic house until we have all convened. Or arrive early to tour the house while you are there.) We will have some copies of the Junior Resistance Ranger booklet for people to hold and you are welcome to bring signs about the need to teach truth and stop censorship.

There are two metro stations within a half-mile of the monument. Union Station (Red Line and Amtrak) is 0.4 miles away and the Capitol South Station (orange/blue/silver lines) is 0.6 miles away. There is also neighborhood street parking east of the site.
